Policy Brief - Lessons from Koko's case study
Introduction: The Koko Story
Koko Networks, celebrated as one of Kenya’s most promising clean energy startups, launched operations in 2019 with a compelling mission: to provide aff ordable, clean cooking fuel to low-income urban households. The company off ered bioethanol fuel and modern cooking stoves as a cleaner alternative to charcoal and kerosene - fuels that have long contributed to deforestation, household air pollution, and related health crises across Africa. Through an innovative network of over 3,000 automated fuel dispensers located in neighbourhood shops, Koko served more than 1.3 million Kenyan households, enabling customers to purchase fuel refi lls for as little as Kshs.30 (approximately US$0.23) using mobile money1.
